Fomicyt®

Fomicyt® belongs to a group of medicines called antibiotics. It works by killing certain types of germs (bacteria) that cause serious infectious diseases. Your doctor has decided to treat you with Fomicyt® to help your body fight an infection. It is important that you receive effective treatment for this condition. This medicine is given as an infusion into a vein (a drip) by a doctor or a nurse.

Fomicyt® is used in adults and children to treat the following infections caused by bacteria:

  • Infections of the urinary tract
  • Infections of the heart – sometimes called “endocarditis”
  • Infections of the bones and joints
  • Infections of the lungs called “pneumonia”
  • Infections of  the skin and tissues below the skin
  • Infections of the central nervous system
  • Infections of the abdomen
  • Infections of the blood, when caused by any of the conditions listed above

This medicine is used when other antibiotics cannot be used or have not worked. This medicine can be given alone or in combination with other antibiotics.

Legal Category

POM: Prescription only medicine.

How does it work?

Fomicyt® acts by interfering with cell wall to block the bacteria causing the infection. Fomicyt® is chemically unrelated to any other known antibiotic and has shown to be effective in treating critically ill patients with multi-drug resistant infections as part of therapy in combination with other antibiotics at the same time.
