Mechanism of Action
Fomicyt® has a unique mode of action – working at an earlier stage of cell wall synthesis than any other antibiotic 1,2

- Fomicyt® exerts a bactericidal effect on proliferating pathogens by preventing the enzymatic synthesis of the bacterial cell wall 2
- It inhibits the first stage of intracellular bacterial cell wall synthesis by blocking peptidoglycan synthesis 2
- It acts as a competitive inhibitor of the enzyme UDP-N-acetylglucosamine-3-0 enolpyruvyl transferase (PEP-Transferase; Mur A) 2
- Fomicyt® therefore breaks down the bacteria’s defence at an earlier stage than other antibiotics, which confers speed of action 2
- Fomicyt® has an additive or synergistic effect with a range of other antibiotics,2,3 and is also an effective combination partner in the treatment of biofilm infections 4
